Here's what nobody tells you about a sequel. The dead come back louder.

The first lot had the decency to shamble. Silent. Dignified, in a shuffling sort of way. This lot came up hollering and they have not stopped since — about the damp, about the century, about the price of everything, and above all about the ache, which apparently never goes away and which they would like to describe to you at length.

The graveyard heaved the whole crowd back up. Can you blame her? Four hundred tenants and every one a complainer.

They walk the night now. They also talk the entire way. Oh, the horror!

From The Morgue

The word came into English out of Haiti. Zonbi in Haitian Kreyòl describes a corpse raised and set to work — a fear rooted in the plantation, and in the possibility that death might not be the end of the labour. American readers met the term during the United States occupation of Haiti, which ran from 1915 to 1934, and it reached print in a 1929 travel account that presented it as reportage rather than folklore. Everything that came afterward — the crowd, the appetite, the slow advance — was assembled somewhere else entirely, and much later.
