The cauldron was on. The cauldron is always on.

"That one," said Griselda, pointing a finger like a dead branch. "The pirate. Nice and plump."

"That's the Hendersons' boy," said Maude. "They do the full-size bars."

Griselda lowered the finger.

"The robot, then."

"Braces. You'll be picking wire out of your teeth till Christmas."

"The ghost."

"That's a pillowcase with holes in it, you daft cow, and it's got a Snickers in it that's mine."

The doorbell went. Both witches looked at the door. The cauldron burbled encouragingly.

"Fine," said Griselda. "We'll get the whole street and sort it out at home."

From The Morgue

There was a specific arithmetic to a 1980s trick-or-treat route and every kid on the block knew it: the houses with the full-size candy bars, the house that gave out apples, the dentist's house that handed out toothbrushes and got egged for it. Costumes came from a cardboard box at the five-and-dime — a plastic mask with an elastic band and a printed smock that had the character's name on it in case the mask wasn't clear enough. You could not breathe in it. You would not have traded it for anything.
