Wolfman Does It Under A Full Moon

Wolfman Does It Under A Full Moon poster art

The mask goes over the snout. The smock goes over the fur. Everybody on Chestnut Street tells him what a wonderful getup it is and hands over the good candy, and nobody runs and nobody telephones anybody, which is the entire point of the exercise.

The trouble is the moon comes up at 7:40 and the good houses do not start until eight.

So there he stands on the corner in a plastic mask of his own face, holding a pillowcase, waiting on the change to finish so the evening can get going like a normal person's.

The smock is flame retardant. The elastic has gone twice.

And the mask fogs. Nobody ever warns you that the mask fogs. Now image what it's like for a wolfman!

From The Morgue

The moon was always there — lunar madness is ancient medicine, which is where the word lunatic comes from, and a Roman soldier strips off by moonlight and turns wolf in a story written in the first century. What is modern is the schedule. The great European werewolf trials of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries turn on pacts, ointments, wolf belts and cursed bloodlines: transformation you agreed to, bought, or inherited. The rigid every-full-moon mechanic arrives on screen in the 1940s and back-fills into everything written since. That change is the whole modern monster — it turns damnation you chose into a condition you're stuck with, on a calendar you don't control.

The wolf as punchline sits next to the wolf as tragedy.
