Consternation Theorem
A field guide to PULP SCIENCE TERROR — the tradition of the learned man with equipment, from Verne's cannon to a brain in a jar flying a saucer.
The theorem, stated first
Terror does not scale with the size of the monster. It scales with the composure of the man measuring it.
That is the whole rule and everything below is the proof. A man running from a thing is a chase. A man screaming at a thing is a scene. A man who has set up an instrument, taken a reading, written the reading down, and gone back for a second reading — that is the one that gets into you, because his calm is a claim. He is behaving as though this is knowable. He has a procedure. And a procedure implies that somebody, somewhere, has been through this before and lived to standardise it.
Call it the consternation theorem. The dread is not in the creature. It is in the notebook.
What PULP SCIENCE TERROR actually is
It is a category, and it runs roughly 1800 to 1970.
It is not science fiction, though it overlaps. It is not horror, though it overlaps there too. The unifying element is not a subject at all — it is a posture. Somewhere in the frame there is an educated person with apparatus and a theory, proceeding with total conviction.
Whether the theory is correct is beside the point and always was. Whether the apparatus would function is beside the point. The pleasure — and the fear, which are closer relatives than people admit — comes from the conviction itself. From somebody who has thought about it, brought the right equipment, and is not going to be talked out of it.
That is why the tradition holds together across writers who have nothing else in common. Verne and Stoker and Doyle and Burroughs and Lovecraft do not share a genre, a nationality, a century or a temperament. What they share is that in each of their worlds, the way you deal with the impossible is: get the gear, form the hypothesis, and go.
The Nebularium
The purest artifact of the whole tradition is a pile of machinery in a garage in Santa Monica.
In 1931 Universal hired an electrician named Kenneth Strickfaden to fill Henry Frankenstein's tower laboratory. He had been an amusement-park man, a wartime serviceman, an aeroplane mechanic and a builder of Tesla coils, and what he produced became the permanent visual template for every mad laboratory that has existed since.
The important part is the naming. Strickfaden's machines had names. The Megavolt Senior. The Nebularium. The Cosmic Ray Diffuser. The Baritron Generator. The Neutron Analyzer.
None of those are things. Not one of them is a device that does anything, or corresponds to any apparatus in any discipline. They are nouns assembled to sound like they belong to a body of knowledge that has already been established somewhere else — which is precisely the trick, because the audience does not need to understand the Baritron Generator. The audience needs to believe that somebody understands it, and that the man in the room is that somebody.
And the machines were real objects, which is the part that turns this from a metaphor into an heirloom. Strickfaden kept them. They were re-lit for the sequels, then Flash Gordon serials, then dozens of features, then an episode of a mid-sixties television sitcom. In 1974 Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder went out to his garage to ask about them, and he dusted them off, and they still worked. He asked for a thousand dollars to rent the lot. They told him it was not enough.
Forty-three years of the most influential scientific equipment in cinema, none of it capable of producing a single result, all of it in perfect working order.
Verne showed his work
The clearest case in the whole category is also the least frightening one, which is how you know the fear is optional and the apparatus is not.
Jules Verne does not write horror. He writes specification. The submarine gets dimensions, a power source, a means of manufacture and an operating philosophy. When he fires a projectile at the moon he does not simply fire it — he convenes a gun club, sites the launch in Florida for latitude, casts the barrel, chooses aluminium for the capsule because of the weight-to-strength ratio, and works through the recoil.
Some of it is even right, in the way a very good guess is right. Most of it is not. It does not matter in the least. What Verne understood before anybody else is that the reader's appetite is not for the destination — it is for the preparation. The chapters people remember are the ones where nothing has happened yet and a committee is arguing about materials.
That is the load-bearing discovery of the entire tradition. Give the reader the equipment list and they will follow you anywhere.
Stoker ran a procedure
Dracula is usually filed as gothic horror and it is structurally a case file.
The novel is assembled entirely from documents — journals, letters, telegrams, newspaper clippings, a ship's log, and transcripts of wax phonograph cylinders. Stoker was writing at the moment when recording and typing and shorthand were new professional instruments, and he built his book out of them. Before you meet the monster you are handed the paperwork.
And Van Helsing is not a mystic. He is a professor with a method. He observes, forms a hypothesis, tests it, and when he is right he applies a protocol: these materials, in this order, at these hours. He performs blood transfusions in the middle of it. The garlic and the wafer sit in the same bag as the surgical instruments and are deployed with exactly the same manner — this is the indicated treatment, we will now administer it.
That is the theorem operating at full strength. The vampire is frightening. The man briskly explaining what the vampire requires, and producing it from a case, is more so.
Doyle believed his own instrument
Arthur Conan Doyle is the category's most useful specimen because he demonstrates it twice, once on purpose and once by accident.
On purpose: a detective whose entire personality is the insistence that his method is a science, and a professor who goes to a plateau in South America and comes back with evidence. Challenger is an apparatus man in the Verne mode, obnoxiously certain and mostly correct.
By accident: the same author examined photographs of fairies taken by two girls in a Yorkshire village and concluded they were genuine, then wrote a book arguing the case in public and staked his reputation on it.
It is tempting to file that as an embarrassment and move on. It is far more interesting to notice that it is the same faculty. The thing that makes Doyle able to write a man who reasons his way to an impossible conclusion with total confidence is the thing that made Doyle reason his way to an impossible conclusion with total confidence. He was not being credulous by his own lights. He was applying a method to evidence and following it where it went.
Conviction is the engine of this tradition, and an engine does not care which direction it drives.
Burroughs skipped the mechanism entirely
Edgar Rice Burroughs proves the boundary from the other side.
John Carter arrives on Mars by a process the book declines to explain. No capsule, no cannon, no committee. It simply happens, in a couple of sentences, and is never revisited.
And then Burroughs spends an entire series building a functioning planet — a dying world kept breathable by an atmosphere plant, with a door, and an operator, and a failure mode. The apparatus is not in the transit. It is in the world, and it is engineered to the point where the plot can eventually turn on whether a particular machine is still running.
Which tells you the rule precisely: the conviction does not have to be spent on plausibility. It has to be spent somewhere, on something, with total commitment. Burroughs waves off the impossible thing in one paragraph so he can be rigorous about everything downstream of it.
Lovecraft's people write it down
And then the tradition arrives at its logical end, where the equipment stops being a tool and becomes the threat.
Lovecraft's protagonists are almost always technicians. A man with a reagent and a corpse and a schedule. A man with a resonator that adjusts the observer rather than the room. Expeditions with survey equipment and core samples and a documented itinerary. Somewhere in nearly every one of these stories there is an instrument being calibrated.
The signature is the notebook. These people keep taking readings while the thing happens to them. The prose stays composed — measured, qualified, academically hedged — right up to and frequently past the point where the narrator has clearly stopped being able to help himself.
That is the theorem at maximum. Nothing in the genre is more frightening than a man who is still being methodical when he obviously should have stopped.
Why it ends around 1970
Categories need an edge and this one has a real one.
Somewhere in the late sixties and early seventies the equipment starts working. Space travel becomes an engineering problem with actual answers, computing arrives, and the culture acquires a large population of people who know what the words mean. Apparatus stops being an incantation and becomes a spec sheet that can be checked.
What replaces conviction is competence, and competence is a different pleasure entirely — admirable, but not frightening. A modern technical thriller wants you to be impressed that the procedure is correct. Pulp Science Terror wants you to be unnerved that the man believes it.
The horror that comes after mostly gives up on explanation altogether, which is the opposite move: the shape in the woods with no theory attached, the killer with no method. That is a legitimate and often superior kind of fear, and it is simply not this one.
So the window closes around 1970, and everything after it belongs to a different shelf.
The brain is the pilot
Which brings us to the shirts, and to the single best compression of this entire argument, which is not in any of the books.
Look at the saucers. There is a glass dome on the top of each one, and inside the dome is a brain — exposed, wet, sitting on a skull, lit from beneath. It is not a creature flying a machine. The specimen jar is the cockpit. The apparatus has stopped being equipment that a scientist operates and has become the body that the scientist now lives in.
That is where this tradition was always heading. Start with a man who brings instruments to the problem. Let him keep going. Give him a hundred and fifty years. Eventually the instruments are the only part of him left, and they are still working, still taking readings, still perfectly calm, hovering over a graveyard at two in the morning with the beam on.
The other posters run the same idea at different points on the timeline — saucers over a churchyard hauling the dead up out of the ground in a green column, and a laboratory scene where a very confident gentleman has made something out of parts and is about to find out how the evening goes.
Nobody in any of these pictures is panicking. That is the whole point. They have a plan, and the plan is numbered.
